The National Coalition of Pastors' Spouses has selected its team of Grassroot Educators who will serve as the official Spot the Block representatives for their national t'ween obesity project. The team members are: Ms. Patricia Greene, a CNA/Student from Florida; Ms. Tonya Jordan, a Marketing Manager - Georgia; Ms. Audrey M. Cloyd, an insurance broker from Illinois, Ms. Anna Elizabeth Warnke, a student from Washington, DC; Ms. Marva Mays, a businesswoman - Texas; and Ms. Dana Plair, a Duke University student from North Carolina.
These five team members will work with NCPS, in conjunction with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Time Warner Cartoon Network, to launch an educational campaign designed to encourage kids ages 9 - 13, to look for the nutrition facts label on food packages and read and think about food facts before making food choices. The National Coalition of Pastors' Spouses (NCPS), a national leader in addressing health disparities at the grassroots level, is pleased to partner with the FDA and Time Warner Cartoon Network in this needed effort.
These Grassroots Educators will work within faith institutions, retail stores, local libraries, youth centers, YMCAs, grocery stores and other such community centers to provide outreach, disseminate campaign messages and ensure that Spot the Block nutritional label awareness remains top of mind among target audiences.
NCPS' Health PETALs will keep you informed on the progress of this initiative. Hats off to each of these ladies!

Dear Mrs. Berryhill and the National Coalition of Pastors' Spouses,
I am pleased to inform you that on April 2, 2009 I introduced the bill, H.R. 1964, The National Black Clergy for the Elimination of HIV/AIDS Act. Congressman Peter King is the lead cosponsor. Your vision and ideas inspired this legislation which when enacted, will be a mighty weapon against HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care particularly in the African American communities.
There are approximately 1.2 million people in the U.S. living with HIV/AIDS and more than 300,000 individuals have never been tested so they do not know their status. African Americans account for half of all diagnosed AIDS cases and half of all new HIV diagnoses. Blacks are eight times more likely to have HIV/AIDS than their white counterparts.
Our country has overcome great challenges before and with the leadership of the faith community, this one will be no difficult task.
Again, I am pleased to have introduced this legislation. I look forward to working with you to pass this bill through Congress.
Sincerely,
Charles B. Rangel, Chairman, Committee on Ways and Means |
